The profit far exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.73 per share. Revenues soared 35% to an all-time record of $17.2 billion in the quarter, driven by higher sales volume, especially new equipment. Excluding the impact of acquisition of Bucyrus International, revenues went up 24% to $15.9 billion. These compared with the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $15.6 billion.
The deluge of this morning’s favorable economic and earnings reports should help stocks sustain Wednesday’s Fed-inspired gains. We got positive weekly Initial Jobless Claims numbers and a better-than-expected Durable Goods Orders reading. On the earnings front, Caterpillar’s (CAT) blowout results will likely ease some of the lingering concerns about weakness in China and other emerging markets. Of this morning’s economic releases, the most important number was the roughly in-line Jobless Claims reading, showing a gain of 21K to 377K. Please recall that we saw an unusually big drop last week, likely resulting from complications in seasonally adjusting the data at this time of the year. Today’s reading goes some way towards correcting that. The four-week average, which smooths out the week-to-week fluctuation, dropped by 2.5K to 377.5K, maintaining its downtrend

Caterpillar, Inc. (CAT) posted an impressive third quarter with record EPS of $1.93 and sales of $14.6 billion driven by increased machine demand and continued economic growth. Results were ahead of Zacks Consensus Estimates. With the Bucyrus acquisition, the company is positioned to be the #1 mining equipment manufacturer in the U.S. with a strong footing in China and India, the major mining markets. Caterpillar’s financial position continues to strengthen through the first nine months of the year. Caterpillar’s cash flow for the period is an all-time high and better than the company’s full-year results so far. Furthermore, the company’s order backlog has steadily increased throughout the year and is at a record level, which holds promise for the year ahead. We upgrade our recommendation from Neutral to Outperform and

Driven by strong global demand for agricultural equipment, AGCO Corporation (AGCO) reported third quarter EPS of $0.87 versus $0.66 in the year-earlier quarter, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.75. For fiscal 2011, AGCO expects EPS of $4.30. Global industry sales are anticipated to grow in 2011. With a full product line of farm equipment and a wide network of dealers and distributors, we believe AGCO is well positioned over the long term to capitalize on the need for increased food production, which is being driven by worldwide population growth. Moreover, the company is also looking to expand operations in high-growth emerging markets, which bode well for future operating performance. We maintain our Outperform recommendation with a target price of $51.00, based on a P/E of 11.7 and our fiscal

Sales growth has nonetheless moderated form the highs of 66% recorded in the month of April.
Caterpillar Inc. (CAT), in its drive to become the global leader in the excavator industry, will further expand its under construction, state-of-the-art, 850,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Victoria, Texas by an additional 200,000 square feet at an added cost of $70 million. The facility will more than treble its existing capacity of hydraulic excavators and will include the addition of selected fabrication manufacturing for excavator production. Caterpillar had earlier announced plans to build this 850,000 square foot operation for $130 million in August last year. Construction began on the facility in September 2010 and is expected to commission in mid-2012. Caterpillar had chosen Texas over Illinois for the facility given the former’s proximity to the company’s suppliers, ports and a business friendly environment given lower taxes and lesser unions. As a cyclist, I’m particularly aware of how bad the roads are near my home. But it’s not just the roads and sidewalks that continue to fall apart. Water lines, sewer lines, airport runways and bridges – much of what keeps our nation humming along – need to be repaired or replaced. And investors should look for ways to profit when a massive project to renovate our aging infrastructure takes place. (BUCY) is now a step closer to being finalized as it has received a go-ahead by the U.S. Department of Justice. The clearance will allow the acquisition to be clinched by mid 2011 subject to other closing conditions being met. In November last year, Caterpillar announced its intention to acquire Bucyrus, a South Milwaukee-based manufacturer of surface and underground mining equipment, in a transaction worth $8.6 billion (including debt). The deal is touted to be the biggest in the company’s history. The billions-of-dollar deal capitalizes on the rising demand for coal and minerals triggered by growth in the emerging nations. With a full product line of farm equipment and a wide network of dealers and distributors, we believe AGCO is well positioned over the long-term to capitalize on the need for increased food production, which is being driven by worldwide population growth. Moreover, the company is also looking to expand operations in high-growth emerging markets, which bode well for future operating performance.
We are encouraged by the long-term fundamentals of the mining industry, which provides Joy Global (JOYG) with substantial growth potential as conditions improve in the U.S., China and India. The company’s first quarter earnings were almost in line with estimates on a significant pick-up in the company’s orders. Additionally, management’s impressive cost-restructuring initiatives, together with expectations of increased spending plans on part of the mining industry, should help the company stay ahead of the curve, in our view. Given the company’s robust 2011 outlook and improving mining industry fundamentals, we see Joy Global shares performing ahead of the broader market going forward and maintain our Outperform recommendation on the stock. The greenback, which has lately developed an inverse relationship with the stock market, fell to a multi-period low. On Tuesday, stocks fell for the second straight day, led by losses in banking and metal sectors. Negative triggers included a decline in the euro, due to fresh worries about Ireland, and a late-session drop in the Treasury market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 60 points, or 0.53%, to about 11,347 with 22 out of its 30 components in the red. During the third quarter of fiscal 2010, the company delivered earnings per share of $1.44, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.25 and outperforming its peer Caterpillar Inc. by $0.22. With an intact farming customer base and improving economic conditions, the company’s sales are ready to rebound significantly. Moreover, Deere is likely to receive a boost from the new Tier4i engine developed recently. The stock is trading at a discount of 17% to the peer group, based on forward earnings estimates. Our long-term Outperform recommendation indicates that it will perform well above the market. Our target price of $93.00, 20.6x 2010 EPS of $4.51, reflects this view. And it’s sitting on your kitchen table. It’s a well-known fact that America has an eating problem, with the level of overweight and obese people spiraling higher. But what you won’t hear about as often is America’s non-eating problem. For example, think about much food you throw away each year, either in the form of leftovers or when it goes bad. You see food wasted all the time in restaurants, too. A huge amount of perfectly good food goes uneaten and simply gets tossed in the trash. And even
