After lower coal production forecasts by U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), railroads are again worried about the proposed regulation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for power plants across 27 states. The proposed guideline –– Carbon Pollution Standard for New Power Plants –– aims at restricting emission of carbon dioxide by new power plants under Section 111 of the Clean Air Act. The standard proposes new power plants to now limit their carbon-dioxide emission to 1,000 pounds per megawatt-hour. Power plants fueled by natural gas have already met these standards but majority of the units using conventional resources like coal are exceeding the set limit, as they emit an average of 1,800 pounds of carbon-dioxide per megawatt-hour. As a result, new power plants either have to be fueled by

In Douglas Adams’ iconic The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Deep Thought tells us the ultimate answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is “42.” The origin and meaning of that number has always intrigued fans. But Douglas Adams explained that there was no real rhyme or reason why he chose “42.” It just popped in his head and he went with it. I always liked Deep Thought’s answer because 42 is a key number for people in the oil business – it’s the number of gallons in a standard barrel of oil. Now, I don’t think there are any sectors as exciting as oil, particularly now. We had a record year in 2011 in terms of prices. This year will be another record year as

OUTLOOK Crude Oil Signs of progress in resolving Europe’s long-running sovereign debt crisis and a tightening global supply picture in view of the geopolitical fallout over Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions have been keeping oil prices at elevated levels. Partly offsetting this favorable view has been high U.S. crude stocks and worries about China’s growth outlook. As such, crude oil’s near-term fundamentals remain mixed, to say the least. The long-term outlook for oil, however, remains favorable given the commodity’s constrained supply picture. In particular, while the Western economies exhibit sluggish growth prospects, global oil consumption is expected to get a boost from continued strength in the major emerging powers like India, China and Brazil that continue to grow at a healthy rate. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), which provides

Perhaps even before. Let me explain… At roughly $2.41 per million Btu, U.S. natural gas prices are in the dumpster. The truth is, they’ve been declining for years. But the recent shale gas boom accelerated their fall. Now they’re the lowest they’ve been in over a decade. If it gets any cheaper, the companies that supply it will be paying you to take it. You see, they have a huge

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sounded another caveat about the deepening global crisis. According to Christine Lagarde, IMF’s Managing Director, the crisis is unfolding, escalating and spreading across the world. She has even suggested that the world could see a re-run of the depression of the 1930s. The view is somewhat endorsed by the recent downward revision in the growth forecast of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for Asia from 7.5% to 7.2% for 2012. IMF has pegged its estimate for global growth at 4% for 2012. The underlying sentiment across the world is downright bearish. Countries in Europe have been threatened with downgrades by Standard

The currency lost as much as 16% in the last four months and close to 7% vis-à-vis the dollar between October-end and November-end.
The U.S. Energy Department’s weekly inventory release showed a larger-than-expected drop in natural gas supplies, as frigid weather in the West led to production freeze-offs. However, gas stocks still remain at elevated levels – 8.7% above the 5-year average and 2.7% higher than the same period last year – reflecting low demand amid robust onshore output. The Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report – brought out by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) every Thursday since 2002 – includes updates on natural gas market prices, the latest storage level estimates, recent weather data and other market activities or events. The report provides an overview of the level of reserves and their movements, thereby helping investors understand the demand/supply dynamics of natural gas.
Over the last few years, a quiet revolution has been reshaping the energy business in the U.S. Known as ‘shale gas’ – natural gas trapped within dense sedimentary rock formations, or shale formations – it is being seen as a game changer, set to usher in an era of energy independence for the country. This unconventional fuel source is expected to transform domestic energy supply in the future decades by providing a potentially inexpensive and abundant new source of fuel for the world’s largest energy consumer. Huge Geographic Potential According to the Annual Energy Outlook 2011 published by the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the U.S. possesses 2,543 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of potential natural gas resources. Of this, natural gas from shale resources accounts for 862 Tcf. In fact, more

Come January 2012, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will have to pare its growth forecast for the world. IMF’s September 2011 projections indicated a global growth of 4% for 2012 as opposed to over 5% in 2010. This announcement by the IMF does not come as a surprise. The financial turmoil and the deepening Eurozone crisis, largely responsible for sluggish global growth and weak investor confidence prompted the IMF to contemplate a recast. “The storm in the Euro area casts a long shadow over the entire global economy,” the IMF chief, Christine Lagarde said in one of her recent statements. In Eurozone, factory activity contracted the fastest in two years and so did British manufacturing. In China too, manufacturing activity was lower in November for the first time in three

When the world economy is reeling under the European sovereign debt crisis and ever-increasing uncertainty in the continent across the Atlantic, here’s some good news from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF has introduced a bailout fund called Precautionary and Liquidity Lines (PLL), to help the troubled Eurozone countries. For investors, this heartening announcement made on Tuesday seems like the best gift this Thanksgiving season. This brings some respite to the nervous investors and the struggling Euro zone countries including Greece, Italy, Spain and Ireland as the bailout indicates some more access to liquidity. But an analytical thinking will actually foretell an even deeper crisis that has compelled the IMF to create new liquidity lines as buffers. Furthermore, questions have been raised on the feasibility of the IMF to

However, some of the encouragement ebbed after analysts questioned the effectiveness of the plan. Nonetheless, investors remained optimistic and the markets logged their fourth-straight week of gains and looked en route to posting the best monthly gains in decades. In an uncharacteristic move, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) gained only 22 points or 0.2% to settle at 12,231.11. It has almost become a norm for the blue-chip index to post double-digit swings and this small movement reflected the pause investors have opted to take.
OUTLOOK Crude Oil Mounting worries about Europe’s debt crisis, a persistently weak U.S. jobs market and less-than-encouraging guidance from the Federal Reserve have been weighing on investor sentiment, weakening oil prices to around $85 a barrel. Apprehensions about high U.S. crude stocks, the release of emergency oil supplies from government-held strategic reserves into the world market, and uncertainty over oil supply disruptions in the Middle East have added to the negative sentiment. These issues have stoked fears about the demand outlook for oil that has seen the commodity’s price plummet to 12-month lows earlier in the month. Incidentally, crude prices zoomed past the $110 per barrel level during the first half of the year.
by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Thursday, October 6, 2011 Earlier, I talked about the 25-year outlook for liquid fuels based on the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) International Energy Outlook 2011. It’s the EIA’s annual 25-year energy forecast, and it contains important information for investors who are considering an investment in the energy sector. Now, I’ll cover the future of coal in the world energy picture. Many countries lack energy policies (including the United States) that restrict or otherwise limit the use of coal. As a result, the use of coal is projected to rise from about 139 quadrillion Btu in 2008 to 209 quadrillion Btu in 2035. That’s an average annual increase of 1.5 percent. Although coal power generations should decline in the United States, dramatic increases are

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Thursday, October 6, 2011 The Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently released its International Energy Outlook 2011. It’s the EIA’s annual 25-year energy forecast, and it contains important information for investors who are considering an investment in the energy sector. Not surprisingly, liquid oil’s share of world energy consumption is predicted to decrease from 34 percent in 2008 to 29 percent in 2035. The decrease is based on dwindling supplies, which are likely to keep prices high. This will prompt users to switch to alternative fuels whenever possible. As expected, two of the main alternatives expected to flourish in production by 2035 will be petroleum from oil sands and natural gas from shale and other unconventional sources. Alternative Petroleum Production According to the EIA,

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Tuesday, September 20, 2011: Issue #1604 By now, everyone should know about America’s abundance of natural gas. Most of the new supplies are coming primarily from the development of major shale plays. The Marcellus, the Haynesville, the Barnett and others are examples of where most of the new gas is coming from. Once a new well is producing gas, it can’t simply be connected to the main transmission line and piped to the end user. It has to be treated first. While processing and treating natural gas is far less complicated than processing crude oil, it’s just as necessary. Unless and until a company’s gas can get treated, it’s going nowhere. I’ve written a number of articles on energy efficiency. Hands down, it’s simply the easiest, most cost-effective way to reduce our consumption of electricity. Period. New power plants can be avoided, and no greenhouse gases or global warming to worry about, either. With 33 percent of the oldest coal plants set to retire over the next decade, it’s even more important that, as a nation, we become as energy efficient as we can. What’s for Dinner? It’s nicknamed the “Keystone State.” But if current natural gas production trends continue at this pace, we may have to rename it something a bit more “energetic.” My 90-acre farm is in the east-central part of the state. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sit over the fairway of either major shale natural gas basins located here. If it did, I might be penning this from my own tropical island. But the good news is there are plenty of ways to invest in the Pennsylvania natural gas boom. And three companies standout above the rest… Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale Basin As you can see from the map below, the Marcellus Shale

Back in May, I wrote an article on the big shift away from drilling for natural gas in favor of oil. At the time, there were 984 rigs drilling for oil. Just a couple of months later, on June 24, the count reached 1,003. That was the first time since Baker Hughes began separating the oil and gas rig counts in 1987 that the 1,000 mark was breached. Its latest report confirms the frenetic pace at which companies have shifted to oil drilling. In its August 26 report, Baker Hughes indicated

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Tuesday, August 30, 2011: Issue #1589 It’s no secret that coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel on the planet. That being said, it’s an essential part of our existence. The world burns more than seven billion tons per year, mostly for electrical power generation. The United States consumes about 14 percent of the world’s total coal production. More than 90 percent of our coal consumption generates 46 percent of our electricity. There are about 600 coal-fired generating stations in the United States. Most of our aging fleet of plants were constructed between 1950 and 1980. A typical one-gigawatt (GW) coal-fired generating plant burns about 2.5 million tons of coal each year.
by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Friday, August 5, 2011 Marc Lichtenfeld discussed Google Wallet and its implications for NXP Semiconductor (Nasdaq: NXPI) back in June. He noted the stock chart looked bad and that a break below $24 would signal a bearish double-top pattern. Well, it fell past $24 last Friday and has dropped all the way to the $18s. This fall was spurred by an announcement that NXP would trim its guidance for the rest of 2011. Demand for the Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology has been slower than the company expected.
