France held an overall successful bond auction, though yields inched up a bit. For the very first time this year, the Dow closed in the red, while the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 index registered small gains to end in the green. The Dow showed its strength by recuperating its triple digit loss to close flat to negative. The Dow Jones Industrial average (DJIA) dropped 0.02% or 2.72 points to close at 12,415.70. The blue chip index’s biggest laggard was Boeing (NYSE:BA), which fell 1.1% to $73.53., while banking giant, Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) was the biggest gainer, increasing by 8.6%.
We continue to maintain a sideline stance on Fiserv Inc. (FISV),and thereby keep our Neutral recommendation on the company. Fiserv is a world leader in providing financial services to technology solutions which include E-commerce systems and other services such as transaction processing, electronic bill payment and presentment, business process outsourcing, document distribution services, and software and systems solutions. The company has been inclined towards making profitable acquisitions over time, which include CheckFree Corporation, AdviceAmerica, iTech Corporation among many others. The company’s recent Carefree acquisition has been a crucial turning point as Fiserv now focuses chiefly on high profit sectors such as online banking solutions and electronic transaction services. It has hence slowly started to steer away from its low margin products including check processing and lending solution services. This move

We reiterate our long-term Neutral recommendation on Amdocs Ltd. (DOX). The company’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 financial results met the Zacks Consensus Estimates. Amdocs enjoys a strong portfolio of several industry-leading technology integration products for managed services and large transformational projects. Amdocs benefited from the long-term trend toward information technology outsourcing. We believe consolidation of the telecom industry may act as a growth catalyst for the company. Historically, Amdocs is a major beneficiary of the merger among the big U.S. telecom carriers. We also believe the long-term fundamentals of Amdocs remain firm mainly due to the transition of telecom service providers to converged IP solutions. However, in the near term, the company may suffer due to higher expenses for productivity improvement and prolonged global economic volatility. Amdocs recently completed the

by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Wednesday, November 30, 2011: Issue #1654 Did someone flick the switch? After several years of up and down economic data, suddenly it feels like the positive data is starting to stick. According to payroll processor ADP (Nasdaq: ADP), 206,000 new private sector jobs were added in November. And October’s figure was revised upwards to 130,000 from 110,000. Despite Washington’s desire to pad their own E*Trade accounts rather than do their job and establish some fiscal sanity, things appear to be slowly on the mend. I know it’s not exactly 1998 when there was a chicken with stock options in every pot, but we’re seeing signs of an economic thaw. Black Friday numbers were sensational. Americans spent $52.4 billion, up 16 percent from last

The Automatic Data Processing (ADP) employment survey was stronger than expected in October. It shows that private sector employment rose by 110,000, above consensus expectations for a 100,000 increase. The September numbers were revised up to a gain of 116,000 jobs from the initial report of a 91,000 gain. On average, the ADP report does a fairly good job of predicting the private sector totals that the BLS reports the following Friday, although in any given month it can be off substantially. It is prone to fairly large errors in both directions. Last month it was a bit on the too-pessimistic side, particularly before the revision. The BLS private sector job gains were 137,000.
We reiterate our long-term Neutral recommendation on Amdocs Ltd. (DOX). Amdocs enjoys a strong portfolio of several industry-leading technology integration products for managed services and large transformational projects. The company benefited from the long-term trend toward information technology outsourcing. We believe consolidation of the telecom industry may act as a major catalyst for the company. Historically, Amdocs remains a major beneficiary of the merger among the big U.S. telecom carriers. We also believe the long-term fundamentals of Amdocs remain firm mainly due to the transition of telecom service providers to converged IP solutions. Amdocs recently completed the acquisition of Bridgewater Systems of Canada, a leading intelligent software developer for converged mobile platform. Bridgewater’s software optimized mobile data growth, reduces network congestion by diverting data traffic to WiFi networks while enabling

However, the Dow and S&P 500 recorded their steepest monthly fall since May 2010, even as indices extended their stay in the green for the fourth-straight day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) opened with gains and was trading substantively higher. However, the Dow lost some of those gains at a later stage to close at 11,613.53, up 0.5%. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) climbed 0.5% to finish the day at 1,218.89. The Nasdaq Composite Index could manage only marginal gains and increased 0.1% to settle at 2,579.46.
The Automatic Data Processing (ADP) employment survey was much stronger than expected in June. It shows that private sector employment rose by 157,000, far above consensus expectations for a 60,000 increase. That marks a nice acceleration from the 36,000 jobs added (as estimated by ADP) in May. The May numbers were revised down from a gain of 38,000 jobs. This is an encouraging report if confirmed by the BLS non-farm payroll report tomorrow. It is not a great report in an absolute sense, but it is far better than expected, and offers reasons for hope after last month’s dismal showing. In May, ADP was more downbeat than the BLS, which reported a total of 54,000 new private sector jobs, but it proved to be closer than the consensus at the

Before the bell this morning, the ADP (ADP) payroll and jobless claims reports hit the headlines, prior to 2nd quarter earnings season beginning next week and tomorrow’s important Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) non-farm payroll report. Both sets of numbers were good news, albeit modestly. Jobless claims fell by 14,000 last week to 418,000 from a revised 432,000 in the previous week, though that revision was up by 4,000, so the improvement was effectively just 10,000. That said, the 4-week moving average also fell 3,000 to roughly 425,000 — also good news, although better news would to be that figure getting back under the psychologically important 400,000 level in the near future. Wi-Fi connectivity is likely to become a huge opportunity for communications service providers. Several industry sources predicted that Wi-Fi enabled wireless devices like phone, computer, and consumer electronics may cross one billion by 2012. In addition to retail consumers, the business enterprises are likely to become major contributor for the growth of mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. The mobile Wi-Fi hotspot becomes widely acceptable in the market once Novatel Wireless Inc. (NVTL) launched its legendary MiFi line of Intelligent Mobile Hotspots in December 2008. MiFi is an ultra-portable wireless device, creating an environment of high-speed internet connectivity that can be easily shared by multiple users using up to five Wi-Fi devices. Although the company fell below the Zacks Consensus Estimates in the first quarter of 2011, management has provided an optimistic outlook for the ensuing second quarter due to significant market traction of its newly launched 4G LTE network capable products. During the last four quarters, Novatel suffered mainly due to lower sales of its 3G access products and ongoing customer transition to next-generation (4G) products. Currently, the company is gradually upgrading its existing customers to its innovative 4G product suite. (DOX), the largest developer of customer experience systems, has decided to acquire Bridgewater Systems of Canada, a leading intelligent software developer for converged mobile platform. Amdocs will pay approximately $215.5 million for Bridgewater. However, after adjusting the net cash position of the company, Amdocs may need to pay a little over $130.7 million. And we got a less-than-reassuring glimpse of the jobs picture through the weaker-than-expected report this morning from payroll processor Automatic Data Processing (ADP). ADP reported that 38 thousand private sector jobs were created in May, which was short of expectations in the 190 thousand vicinity. If this is a true reflection of the jobs picture in May, then we better brace ourselves for a major negative surprise from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Friday. Either way you look at it, today’s ADP report is not a good sign for the economic recovery. ADP’s position as the nation’s largest private-sector payroll processor provides it an excellent vantage point from which to

A volatile day of trading came to a close with benchmarks ending in the red and as it stands there are now clear signs of markets heading into a fifth consecutive week of losses. Investors refrained from betting big ahead of the crucial jobs report from the Labor Department, which will likely add to concerns about a slowing economy. Markets had initially garnered some gains, but these were soon washed out as investors remained worried about the jobs report. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) had dropped 100 points in the mid-session but finally recovered to end at 12,248.55, dropping 41.59 points or 0.3%. The Dow is most likely en route to its fifth straight week of losses, the first time since July 23, 2004. The Standard & Poor 500

The Automatic Data Processing (ADP) employment survey was weaker than expected in April. It shows that private sector employment rose by 179,000, below consensus expectations for a 200,000 increase. That marks a slowdown from the 207,000 jobs added (as estimated by ADP) in March. Partially offsetting the disappointment was the fact that the March numbers were revised up from a gain of 201,000 jobs. The gains, however, were widespread, and if confirmed by the BLS on Friday, would still be a solid report. In March, ADP was a bit on the conservative side, as the BLS reported a total of 230,000 private sector jobs. In January it was far too optimistic, showing a gain of 187,000 and then the BLS only reported a gain in private sector jobs of 50,000

Earnings per share increased 8.0% year over year and 37.1% sequentially. The third quarter earnings were primarily driven by strong Employer Services and PEO Services. Additionally, the Dealer Services segment continued its recovery. Operating Performance Net income from continuing operations increased 5.5% year over year to $423.8 million. A lower effective tax rate in the quarter positively impacted the net earnings from continuing operations. Net margin of 15.5% dropped from 16.4% in the prior year quarter.
We are currently upgrading our recommendation on Novatel Wireless Inc. (NVTL) to Neutral based on its current valuation. The stock price has declined sharply by more than 56% in the last year and currently trading at the low-end of its 52-week price range. We believe this low valuation level may provide a cushion for further downside. Novatel provided a very weak first-quarter 2011 financial outlook. Management cited lower sales of its 3G access products and ongoing customer transition to next-generation 4G products are the primary reasons for this poor guidance. We remain concerned regarding Novatel’s business with Verizon Wireless (VZ), an important customer for its MiFi intelligent hotspots. A Bloomberg report forecasted that Verizon will soon start selling Apple Inc. (AAPL) developed iPad with internal connectivity for its high-speed 3G

Markets were also guided higher as Fed officials stated they would stick to their plans of providing economic stimulus. The recent trend of the 3G USB modem industry is indicating a glut of inventory on the part of the wireless carriers. Several industry sources predicted that Verizon Wireless, a important customer of Novatel for its MiFi intelligent hotspot, may generate lukewarm demand in the first quarter of 2011 attributable to its huge modem inventory. Furthermore, following its closest rival AT&T, Verizon may start selling Apple Inc’s iPad with a built-in 3G chipset. If this actually happens, it will drastically reduce the demand for MiFi, the best selling product of Novatel. In addition, Novatel is now facing increasing competitive pressure from emerging Asian equipment developers. We do not find any

Initial Claims for Unemployment Insurance fell by 42,000 last week to 415,000 (last week was revised up by 3,000, so one could see it as a 39,000 decline). This was a bit better than the expected level of 425,000. This is a welcome turnaround, but only partially negates last week’s big increase. This is a series that tends to be a bit on the flakey side around the holidays. That, however, does not start to describe the recent behavior of this series, as it has been downright erratic. The Yo-Yo Effect Normally one would get excited about a drop of this magnitude, but this just seems like the yo-yo going down again. We had a big drop during the Christmas week to 388,000, and then big increases over two weeks,

Novatel Wireless Inc. (NVTL) yesterday announced the launch of its compact and light-weight DC-HSPA+ USB modem on Bell Mobility’s Dual-Cell HSPA+ (DC HSPA+) network. The Ovation MC547 USB modem is based on the 3GPP Release 8 standard and will provide the next-generation, high-speed mobile environment. By providing theoretical peak downlink data rates of up to 42 Mbps and 11 Mbps on the uplink, DC-HSPA+ will enable carriers to upgrade their existing infrastructure equipment and achieve significantly higher bandwidths. Despite providing disappointing results, Novatel provided an extremely strong financial outlook for the ensuing fourth quarter. For fourth quarter 2010, management expects revenues to be in the range of $110 million – $115 million. Gross margin will be around 19%-20%. Non-GAAP EPS is expected in the range of 2 cents to 5

We downgrade our recommendation on Amdocs Limited (DOX) to Underperform on the basis of its disappointing financial outlook for the first quarter of fiscal 2011. Profitability will suffer as a result of higher expenses for productivity improvement, emerging market sales opportunity, and suspension of program implementation at Clearwire Corp. (CLWR). We believe bottom-line shrinkage may continue thereafter as the developed economies are still not out of the woods and emerging market opportunities are subject to regulatory and geo-political uncertainties. The company is still facing demand softness in the European regions and also in the North American markets. While the macro economic factors are mostly negative in Europe, Amdocs is facing competitive pressure in North America. These two regions remain near-term concerns. As a result, the company is forced to concentrate

The Automatic Data Processing (ADP) employment survey was a bit better than expected in October. It shows that private sector employment rose by 43,000 last month, above consensus expectations for a 23,000 increase. Also, the September numbers were revised to a loss of just 2,000 jobs rather than the original estimate of a loss of 39,000 jobs. ADP, as the largest payroll processing firm in the country, is in a very good position to look at the state of the job market. This is evidence of an economy that is growing, but at a very slow pace. While it is nice to see a better-than-expected increase — and so far this year the ADP report has consistently been more pessimistic than the BLS report (due out Friday morning) — it

We upgrade our recommendation to Neutral for Novatel Wireless Inc. (NVTL), which means the stock will perform mostly in line with the broader market. According to our analysis, proper execution of cost structure and expected launch of 4G (LTE) embedded products are likely to benefit the company’s earnings power in future reporting quarters. An extremely strong balance sheet may boost investor’s confidence on management to sustain a challenging economic condition. Furthermore, the stock price has fallen nearly 33% in the last one year and at this stage we do not find further downside potential. Recently, Novatel has launched an innovative USB modem for Dual-Carrier HSPA+ networks. Ovation MC545 theoretically provides downlink speed of 42 Mbps and uplink speed of 5.7 Mbps and supports the 900, 1900, and 2100 MHz frequency

Recently, Novatel Wireless Inc. (NVTL) has launched an innovative product portfolio for customer broadband access capable of supporting next-generation (4G) super-fast wireless broadband networks of WiMAX and LTE. The portfolio includes LTE embedded modules, USB devices and WiMAX-capable MiFi Intelligent mobile hotspots. Just two weeks ago, Novatel has introduced Ovation MC545 USB modem for Dual-Carrier HSPA+ networks. Ovation MC545 theoretically supports downlink speed of 42 Mbps and uplink speed of 5.7 Mbps. This device supports the 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz frequency bands and is designed to provide connectivity anywhere within the operator’s network. Another advantage of Ovation MC545 is that it is the industry’s smallest dual-carrier HSPA+ modem.
