We have upgraded the long-term (more than six months) recommendation on the shares of Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) to Neutral from Underperform due to its growing battery business, strong acquisition policy and long-term focus on emerging markets. The company’s battery business is set to grow globally from new hybrid wins, and the company is adding capacity to meet demand. Last year, the company invested $138.5 million to convert its battery plant near Toledo, Ohio into an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery facility, the first in the U.S., to manufacture Start-Stop and other batteries for high efficiency vehicles. Currently, Johnson Controls is the leading supplier of Start-Stop batteries in Europe through its VARTA brand. It believes the market for Start-Stop batteries will grow to 35 million units by 2015, with the

BorgWarner Inc. (BWA) plans to sell its tire pressure monitoring business to Germany-based Huf Electronics GmbH as it diverts its attention to powertrain technologies. The sale includes a manufacturing facility in Bretten, Germany that employs 230 people. BorgWarner acquired the tire pressure monitoring business in 2005 as a part of its BERU diesel cold start and ignition systems business. The company would incur a book loss of approximately $10–$15 million due to the sale of the business. The sale of the business at a book loss is not a negative factor when the company is highly optimistic about its powertrain business. BorgWarner expects net new powertrain business of $2.5 billion from 2012 through 2014, reflecting a 9% increase from its previous three-year net new business.
Meritor, Inc. (MTOR) is a globally recognized automotive parts supplier. However, the company has high customer concentration, which implies limited scope for margin expansion. Further, the recent turmoil in the global economy is expected to continue to mar its results. We are also disappointed about Meritor’s deteriorating cash flow. Although the company’s fiscal fourth quarter profit was ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate by $0.19 per share, we remain concerned about its long-term outlook. Our long-term Underperform recommendation on the stock indicates that it will perform lower than the broader market. Our $5.50 target price, 3.8X our 2012 EPS estimate, reflects this view.
India’s 3G and broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum (radio airwave) auctions are expected to earn more than INR500 billion (US$11.2 billion) in revenues, based on recent information from the country’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT). This represents a marked increase from the government’s previous revenue expectation of INR350 billion (US$7.8 billion). The DoT is auctioning 3-4 slots of 3G spectrum in the 2.1 gigahertz (GHz) band in India’s 22 service areas (called “circles”). The limited number of available license slots is propelling the bids. The DoT will also auction two blocks of BWA spectrum two days after the closure of the 3G auction.
