On January 22, 1984, Apple ran a television commercial introducing the Macintosh computer during the broadcast of Super Bowl XVIII. Inspired by George Orwell’s book 1984, a woman hurls a sledgehammer through a giant screen – in a fiery explosion – where a “Big Brother” figure is speaking to a bunch of nameless, unemotional faces. The takeaway was, of course, that IBM (NYSE: IBM) was taking over the world. Buying a Mac would show off your individuality and support of independent thought. That commercial was one of the most memorable and successful of all time. If the spot ran today, few would assume that the Big Brother character was IBM. A more logical assumption would be that it was Microsoft, Google, Facebook or, ironically, Apple itself. Fact is, to this

In recent times, BMC Software (BMC) is seeing growing demand for its private cloud enhancement services. The recent taker of BMC’s services is Japanese IT infrastructure provider Fujitsu FSAS. Fujitsu has deployed the BMC BladeLogic Automation Suite to consolidate its nationwide servers and restructure the company’s private cloud. FSAS had sprawling IT operations across 80 locations in Japan, which the company wanted to consolidate into its East and West divisions. The BMC BladeLogic Automation Suite has enabled Fujitsu to unify its operations across the two sites. Fujitsu FSAS initially approached Fujitsu Limited, a partnership concern of BMC Software, to provide a viable solution. BMC is increasingly making its presence felt in the cloud computing market. Apart from cloud computing, BMC is promoting its Remedy ITSM suite, and also struck a

Following the second quarter 2012 earnings announcement on January 19, more than half the analysts covering Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) have made downward revisions to their estimates. The reason for the downward movement can be traced to the negative affect on the PC supply chain due to hard-disk drive (HDD) shortages and macroeconomic uncertainties that are expected to continue well into 2012. Last Quarter Synopsis Microsoft’s second quarter results were a couple of cents higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate. However, the client PC business was impacted by the Thai floods, although all the other areas of the business saw good growth. Microsoft’s revenue was up sequentially as well as from the year-ago quarter at $20.89 billion, led by a triple-digit growth in the Entertainment & Devices segment and all other

Yesterday, Oracle Inc. (ORCL) agreed to buy Taleo Corp. (TLEO), a SaaS human resource software provider, for $1.9 billion or $46 per share. Following this announcement, shares of Taleo were up nearly 17%, closing at $45.64, yesterday. Taleo has a clientele that spreads across 5000 organizations. Taleo’s Talent Management Cloud helps organizations to enhance human resource capabilities, improve performance and drive growth. We believe that this acquisition is further evidence of Oracle’s continued focus on its cloud computing infrastructure. The acquisition is expected to expand Oracle’s public cloud offering. The public cloud, which originally comprised existing products including fusion applications, expanded the company’s penetration into the SaaS application space. Earlier, Oracle had locked horns with SAP AG (SAP) for acquiring California-based cloud-computing software company SuccessFactors Inc. (SFSF), a developer of

The Semiconductor Industry serves as a driver, enabler and indicator of technological progress. Developments in the industry determine the way we work, transport ourselves, communicate, entertain ourselves and respond to our environment. The PCs we work on, the cars we drive, the phones we communicate with, the electronic gadgets on which we watch movies, listen to music and play games on, and the planes and weapons used to transport or protect us use semiconductor devices. As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions and so forth. The past decade has seen big changes in the industry, with most players streamlining operations and transferring more routine production to low-cost

BMC Inc. (BMC) is scheduled to announce its third quarter 2012 results on February 1, 2012 and we do not see much variation in the analysts’ estimates at this point. Second Quarter Overview The company reported second quarter 2012 earnings per share of 75 cents, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 71 cents. Total revenue of $556.7 million in the reported quarter increased 10.8% year over year. During the quarter, BMC witnessed a number of deal wins pertaining to cloud technology. Moreover, the company currently has a strong line up of new cloud deals. Another strategic imperative on the company’s part is to become the leader in Software-as-a-Service (S-a-a-S) management. The company added a number of new SaaS customers during the quarter and the related amount of subscription annual contract

The last month has seen 10 analysts lowering estimates for the quarter, which took the Zacks Consensus down a penny. Therefore, without the revisions, Microsoft would have exceeded expectations. While the client PC business was slightly impacted by the Thai flooding, all other areas of the business saw good growth. Investors reacted as may be expected, taking share prices up 2.42% in after-hours trading. Revenue Revenue of $20.89 billion was up 20.2% sequentially and 4.7% from last year, just short of consensus expectations of $20.93 billion.
Oracle Corp. (ORCL) recently launched its new financial services software, namely Oracle Financial Services Liquidity Risk Management. The new software will help banks to efficiently and effectively assess their liquidity risk. Financial Services Liquidity Risk Management is fully compliant with Basel III guidelines for liquidity risk management issued by Bank of International Settlements (BIS). The software can calculate liquidity coverage ratio, net stable funding ratio and funding concentrations, which will help the banks to measure their liquidity strength as per the Basel III regulations. Basel III implementation has emerged as a challenge for regulatory, capital and liquidity risk managers owing to the current stringent regulations. This marks the company’s third acquisition in the past month and the largest after the acquisition of Sun Microsystems in January 2010. The acquisition is expected to close by early 2012. According to Bloomberg, the acquisition values RightNow at 68 times EBITDA, the highest multiple for similar deals over the past five years. Earnings per share (EPS) of 22 cents (including stock-based compensation expenses but excluding amortization) increased 69.2% from 13 cents per share reported in the year-earlier quarter. Strong bottom-line growth was primarily driven by higher revenues and operating margin, which fully offset a slight decline in gross margin and higher tax rate in the quarter.
After the bell Tuesday, Oracle Corporation (ORCL) reported earnings for its fiscal 1st quarter of 2012, and as per usual the giant tech firm beat estimates, albeit on somewhat modest expectations. Reported EPS of 45 cents per share (Zacks is not taking the entire amortization charge in the company’s headline 48 cents per share number) beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 44 cents, and revenues of $8.4 billion topped Zacks expectations of $8.3 billion. In the run up to the earnings results, we do not notice any substantial movement in analysts’ estimates for the quarter. Looking Back at 4Q11 Oracle reported robust top-line growth in the fourth quarter of 2011 that helped the company earn 71 cents per share in the quarter, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by two cents. Total revenue in the fourth quarter increased 12.2% year over year to $10.81 billion, driven by better-than-expected new software license revenues (up 19.2% year over year), fully offsetting a decline in hardware sales (down 4.0% year over year).
As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. (GOOG) have agreed to attend a settlement discussion over the copyright- and patent-infringement lawsuit filed by Oracle last year. As per the order of the U.S magistrate, both the companies will be represented by their respective Chief Operating Officers (CEO). The settlement meeting is scheduled on September 19, 2011 and will be mediated by the U.S. Magistrate Judge. The attendance of the two CEO’s, Oracle’s Larry Ellison and Google’s Larry Page in the settlement meeting was strongly recommended in the September 8 court filing by the U.S. District Judge William Alsup, who is presiding over the case. The recommendation followed Oracle’s complaint regarding the failure of its out-of-court settlement efforts due to Google’s reluctance. In

Positive economic reports on the U.S. front and lingering optimism from Thursday’s Greek deal are expected to help stocks push higher today. Approval from the Greek parliament next week for the new austerity plan will pave the way for a fresh multi-year rescue fund for the country. On the domestic economic front, we got a better-than-expected Durable Goods report for May and the first quarter GDP growth estimate was modestly revised higher. The positive Durable Goods report is evidence that the manufacturing sector is still quite healthy. The internals of the report were also quite good, showing a reversal of the negative trend that we saw in the April report. Other than the reassuring report on the manufacturing side, a positive recent development has been the downtrend in oil prices.

After the closing bell Thursday, Oracle Corp. (ORCL) beat earnings and revenue estimates for the company’s fiscal 4th quarter of 2011. Earnings of 75 cents per share easily beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 69 cents, and revenues in the quarter totaled $10.8 billion, topping the $10.76 billion expected. A tidy but solid outperformance is customary for Oracle, and its 4th quarter positive earnings surprise of 8.7% is also a 26.3% improvement year over year. Analysts had largely steered clear of estimate revisions over the past 30 days — again, quite typically — and Oracle’s earnings beat also topped The Street’s “whisper number” of 72 cents per share.
by Justin Dove, Investment U Research Wednesday, June 22, 2011 It’s hard to imagine Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) making mistakes. They haven’t made many, but this one could hurt if Oracle (Nasdaq: ORCL) gets its way. Oracle claims that Google infringed upon Java patents when creating its successful Android mobile device platform. And now, it’s become a major patent lawsuit. Google could stand to lose up to $6.1 billion, plus court costs, if they lose. But a ruling in Google’s favor may seriously hinder the future relevance of Sun Microsystems, Inc. and hurt Oracle’s stock… Did Google Create Dalvik to Avoid Java’s Virtual Fees? The legal suit was filed on the basis of a formal legal demand, which HP sent to Oracle on June 8, 2011, asking the latter to reverse its decision regarding the discontinuing support for the Itanium-based servers. In the lawsuit filed at the state court in San Jose, California, HP has accused Oracle of contract breach related to the development of software for the Itanium-based HP servers. HP has also alleged that Oracle is persuading customers to replace their Itanium-based HP servers with Sun servers. They already resigned themselves to Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) boasting better market capitalization last year. But last week, even IBM (NYSE: IBM) edged past Microsoft’s valuation, if only for a brief time. It’s completely commoditized.” Investors recognize the changing times, as well, which is why some of them want to oust Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. That call originally came from hedge fund manager and large MSFT shareholder David Einhorn. Ballmer just can’t

The decision marks Microsoft’s divergence from its traditional partner Intel Corp (INTC), which is also fighting its own battle in the mobile computing space. Intel started promoting its trademarked “ultrabook,” which it expects will enable notebook-makers to regain some of the market share it lost to Apple Inc’s (AAPL) iPad. The devices are expected to be lighter and just slightly more expensive than Apple’s, while providing greater functionality. Intel executives stated that ultrabooks based on Intel’s new chips would sport an advanced touch screen, start in a few seconds, connect to the Internet almost immediately and have several days of battery life

As environmental issues have become more of a concern today, semiconductor devices are being made to reduce power consumption, reduce heat dissipation, capture solar energy, create more efficient lighting solutions, and so forth. The past decade has seen big changes in the industry, with most players streamlining operations and transferring more routine production to low-cost
