Following the first quarter earnings announcement on May 3, none of the analysts covering Scripps Network Interactive Inc. (SNI) have revised their estimates. The brokers have retained their estimates based on the belief that the company will benefit from the continuous growth in advertising and affiliate fee revenues along with its initiative to acquire channels in the international market. However, they remain concerned about the company’s decision to increase its marketing expenses in order to expand its viewer base, which might impact its bottom line. First Quarter Highlights On a GAAP basis, quarterly net income was $114.9 million or 73 cents per share, compared with $100.5 million or 59 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted EPS of 73 cents was substantially ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of

The Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD) is the latest to join the ever-growing list of banks facing litigation over misconduct and malpractices concerning overdraft fees. The bank has agreed to pay $62 million in settlement of a lawsuit filed against it by its customers accusing it of unreasonable assessment and collection of overdraft fees. However, the settlement requires approval from the U.S. District Judge in Miami. Background The customers accused TD Bank of regularly dealing with transactions pertaining to debit cards in the order of magnitude of the transaction rather than the chronological order. The intentional malpractices resulted in faster negative balances in customers’ accounts, leading to a larger number of overdrawn transactions, each of which then became chargeable. Consequently, overdraft fees piled up in excess. Moreover, TD Bank violated the U.S.

We are upgrading our long-term recommendation on PPG Industries (PPG) to Outperform from Neutral. The company’s strategy of diversifying its business across various products and geographies has come in handy in difficult times of the economy. It has trumped the Zacks Consensus Estimates over the last four quarters, which is a testimony to the fact that it has done well even when the economy was under pressure. More importantly, the company’s revenues from emerging markets grew over the last three years and constituted 27% of total revenue in 2011. PPG Industries is focused on tapping the potential of emerging markets and acquired the coatings business of Colpisa earlier this year. The acquisition has led the company to become the only major coatings supplier to automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with

(AIZ) has declared an increase in its share buyback authorization program, which comes on the heels of an approval to increase dividend announced last week. The board of directors of Assurant approved the repurchase of up to $600 million of its shares. The new authorization comes on top of $170 million remaining under the existing program as of April 30, 2012. Assurant will use its healthy cash flow from operations to buyback shares. The company ended the first quarter with $600 million in total holding company capital and has a strong balance sheet with a low debt ratio of 18.2% and no debt maturing until 2014. Assurant has been aggressively buying back shares.
Markets suffered a heavy fall yesterday as political uncertainty in Europe continued and China’s economic health looked gloomier than previously perceived. Financial bellwether JPMorgan’s disclosure that it had suffered a $2 billion trading loss remained an overhang on the markets and dragged down financials once again. As the benchmarks finished in the red, S&P 500 recorded its lowest level since February. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) inched down 1% to close at 12,695.35. The Standard & Poor 500 (S&P 500) lost 1.1% and finished yesterday’s trading session at 1,338.35. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index slumped 1.1% and ended at 2,902.58. The fear-gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) jumped almost 10% to settle significantly higher at 21.87.
The U.S. is the world’s largest aerospace and defense market, and also home to the world’s largest military budget. The growth of the Aerospace and Defense industry depends largely on the spending outlook of government departments, with the U.S. defense budget being the primary driver. The industry largely depends on U.S. government contracts. Given the uncertain macroeconomic environment, not just in the U.S. but also globally, the industry faces the risk of fewer new orders as customers are more likely to postpone or cancel contractual orders and/or payments. Defense spending is the major source of revenue for the top nine global aerospace and defense companies, with the US accounting for more than 40% of total global defense spending. However, with the U.S. government expected to institute greater austerity in its

Some stocks have been excessively volatile. Take Mastercard (MA), for instance. Shares of MA fell 10.6% on Monday, rebounded 10.6% on Tuesday and fell 5.9% on Wednesday. The stock gained 7.7% yesterday. One does not have to be an expert on Mastercard to assume that its business does not change that much on a daily, or even weekly, basis.
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke continues to be the enemy of savers. On Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox fan reiterated his belief that interest rates should be kept at rock-bottom levels for an extended period of time. He views this as necessary in order to keep the economy growing. Part of Bernanke’s problem has been his inability to accelerate the pace of money movement, or velocity. Velocity is an economic measure of how many times a dollar is used to purchase goods and services. For instance, if I give you a $100 bill and you put it into your dresser, there is no real velocity. However, if you use it to make a repair on your car and then your mechanic spends the cash on buying a replacement part, velocity

Income-oriented investors have yet another reason to be upset with the bond markets. Junk bond yields fell to a record low a few days ago and are staying near those levels. As of Wednesday evening, the Barclays U.S. Corporate High Yield index yielded a mere 6.68%, which isn’t much when you consider the risk of default. These low yields are just one sign of the bond market’s cheery mood. Corporations are finding plenty of buyers for their debt, and many offerings have been completed this week. Among the investment-grade companies selling bonds are Google (GOOG), Norfolk Southern (NSC) and Walt Disney (DIS). Included in this week’s near-record level of junk bond offerings is beleaguered Chrysler, which is refinancing its loan package. Taking advantage of the low interest rates is good

As I started writing this on Thursday morning, iShares Silver Trust ETF (SLV) was down by 5.7%. Though significant by itself, the decline was just the latest in what has been a very bad month for SLV shareholders. Since the start of May, the ETF has fallen from $46.88 to this morning’s $32.42, a drop of nearly 31%. The drop is even worse when you consider that SLV hit an intraday high of $48.35 on April 28. Chart courtesy of FreeStockCharts.com Notice the volume bars at the bottom of the chart. General Electric (GE) is always at the top of that list. The key to success at GE is that it is so big and in so many sectors that it’s revenue almost mirrors the whole economy in general. Where it shines is that most of its divisions seem to me managed better than most of their competitors, which equates to the bottom line. The price has enjoyed momentum on Barchart as the economy recovers.
Inflation and speculation about what the Fed’s next move will be are prominent in headlines about the bond market, but there are also scattered reports that show an increased tolerance for risk among bond investors. One recent example is payment-in-kind toggle notes, or PIK toggles. These are notes that allow borrowers to issue additional debt securities in lieu of paying cash for interest payments. In other words, if an issuer does not have the cash for the next coupon payment, bondholders will receive more debt. Think about it as a loan that is being repaid with a promissory note to pay you even more back at a later date. As Dow Jones Newswires reported last week, a $600 million offering from Aramark Holdings Corporation tied for the biggest PIK toggles

It’s big news for the investment industry. It has also sparked patriotic talk on both sides of the Atlantic about the naming of the combined company. It will certainly bring a close look by regulators. Not to mention the hubbub about what will happen to the infamous New York Stock Exchange trading floor. For individual investors, it’s an interesting event, but not an actionable one. Trades executed by individual investors for buying or selling NYSE-listed stocks are currently routed to computers, not humans.
What impact should Egypt have on your investing decisions? The answer is not much, unless you believe you have particularly good insight into Middle East affairs. My rationale is that Egypt accounts for a small portion of the world economy and, more importantly, that the events unfolding are unpredictable. Egypt’s economy generated about $200 billion in 2010, a small enough size not to disrupt global growth. It is also small enough not to account for a significant position in most international funds. For example, the country comprises just 9.3% of T. Rowe Price’s Africa & Middle East Fund (TRAMX). The only way to get direct exposure is to specifically seek it out by investing in a fund like Market Vectors Egypt Index ETF (EGPT). I will have more to say

The Investment Company Institute (ICI) calculates that muni bond funds incurred $2.4 billion worth of outflows last week. This was the 10th consecutive week of outflows. Since the week of November 10, cumulative outflows have exceeded $25 billion. (The ICI monitors inflows and outflows for more than 95% of mutual fund assets. The data reflects portfolio changes for both individual and institutional investors.) The outflows reflect concerns over fiscal problems at state, county and local governments. Declines in tax revenues caused by a weak economy combined with stretched budgets are the primary culprits, as you know. A lack of effective budgeting and planning is compounding matters for certain government entities. These are

The latest Facebook offering shows just how willing some investors are to participate in the latest mania, even when another bubble burst not too long ago. Goldman Sachs is offering its clients the chance to participate in a $1.5 billion offering for shares of the social networking website. News reports say the offering values the company at $50 billion. Such a valuation puts Facebook in a very elite group; only 125 companies publicly traded in the U.S. were worth $50 billion or more at start of 2011. The valuation looks even loftier when Facebook’s income statement is considered. Though information is limited, the Wall Street Journal reported that analysts believe revenues totaled approximately $2 billion last year. If that is the case, Facebook is being valued at 25x sales.
Ten-year Treasuries are still yielding less than 3%, despite a recent rebound in yields. Since that’s not very much, I looked to see how easy it would be to create a diversified portfolio with higher yielding stocks. There were three primary characteristics I sought out in potential candidates. The first was a history of dividends, so I required five consecutive years of dividend payments. Second, I wanted companies that generated cash from their business operations. Therefore, I looked for companies that have reported five consecutive years of positive cash flow from operations. (Located on the cash flow statement, this number shows whether a company’s business operations is producing or using up cash.) Finally, being a value guy, I did not want to overpay, so I required a price-earnings ratio below

December 2, 2010 The holiday shopping season got off to a good official start this past weekend. The National Retail Federation estimates that total spending reached $45 billion during the three-day period of Black Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Shoppers spent an average of $365.34, up from $343.31 last year. The buying continued on Cyber Monday. ComScore calculated that online sales topped the $1 billion mark for the first time ever. E-commerce sales rose 16% from last year, with average spending per transaction rising 10% to $60.05. Several reports said traffic both at physical stores and online retailers was up. What is not shown in these numbers is the fact that holiday promotions started prior to Black Friday. Many retailers offered door buster-type deals throughout November. As a result, same-store sales

November 11, 2010 I noticed a decline in the number of stocks that were trading below their average valuations of the past five years in my Risk-Reward stock screen this past weekend. I was not surprised to see to this change, given the nice upward move in stocks we have had lately. The obvious question, however, is whether valuations are starting to become pricey? To answer this question, I screened the price-book (P/B) ratios of S&P 500 companies using our Stock Investor Pro program. (Price-book is a stock’s price divided by equity per share.) As of last Friday, 166 S&P 500 member companies had P/B ratios that were above their five-year averages and 297 had P/B ratios that were below their five-year averages. (The remainder either had valuations that matched

A bit of volatility returned to the stock market earlier this week following China’s surprise rate hike and disappointment with some of the details within Apple’s (AAPL) earnings report. The approximate 1.6% drop in the S&P 500 turned heads because stocks had been trending up so nicely as of late. What often gets lost in the daily tracking of the financial markets, however, is perspective. For example, let’s look at the S&P 500. Since the end of August, the large-cap index has appreciated by more than 12%. Conversely, since the end of April, the index is down just under 1%. In other words, despite more volatility than we would like, the S&P 500 is currently trading at a level that is more less where the index was last spring. The

The Federal Reserve continues to be the enemy of savers. The minutes of the September Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, released earlier this week, signaled the possibility of new actions to bring long-term interest rates down further. Specifically, several committee members stated that if the pace of the economic recovery does not strengthen or if inflation does not intensify, “they would consider it appropriate to take action soon.” What could this action be? Most likely, it would involve the Fed purchasing more Treasury securities. Since bond yields are inversely related to bond prices, more demand for Treasuries should effectively drive down yields. The FOMC also considered providing some type of target rate for either inflation or nominal GDP. (A nominal rate includes the impact of inflation. Conversely, a real

They own 7 of the top 15 brands in the world and have a strong mix of international and local products that seek to appeal to a wide array of adult smokers. This company is the proverbial cash cow and is using its cash flow not only to repurchase its stock but to acquire smaller tobacco brands in the emerging markets all over the world. Although sales may be off in the US and Europe the growth markets in Asia and Latin America may more than offset shrinking markets in the developed nations.
October 14, 2010 The Federal Reserve continues to be the enemy of savers.

Liquidity may not be the first characteristic you think about when evaluating a potential investment, but it is something to factor in to your decision. A large amount of liquidity can make prices more efficient and facilitates easier trading (buy and sell orders are filled relatively quickly). Conversely, low levels of liquidity can cause securities to be mispriced and lengthen the period required to execute a transaction, as the “flash crash” showed. I bring this subject up because last week, a joint U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission-Securities and Exchange Commission (CFTC-SEC) committee issued their findings about the market events of May 6. The committee’s report discusses how a trader tried to execute an order to sell approximately $4.1 billion worth of E-mini S&P 500 futures contracts at a time when

Third-quarter earnings season will “officially” start next Thursday when Alcoa (AA) reports. Overall corporate profit growth should be good. Standard & Poor’s predicts that per share operating earnings for the S&P 500 will rise 31% this quarter on a year-over-year basis. Thomson Reuters calculates the consensus growth estimate as being slightly more conservative at 24%. Either way, this should be the fourth consecutive quarter of profit growth. Dirk van Dijk at Zacks.com is looking for a mid-single-digit increase in revenues. He also believes that widening net margins will have the biggest impact on profit growth. Van Dijk observes that financial companies should show the biggest year-over-year improvement in profitability, thanks to easy comparisons. The summer’s economic speed bump will likely be reflected in these numbers, though it’s worth noting that

They are engaged in the provision of practice management services to the Affiliated Practices pursuant to long-term Administrative Services Agreements with separately organized affiliated professional associations. Under the Administrative Services Agreements, they have control over all non-orthodontic functions of the PA Contractors Incorporatedluding administrative, management, billing and support functions. Dentists have a reputation of being poor business managers, so they need all the help they can get. The fundamentals of this stock are very hard to believe. Seven Wall Street brokerage firms have buy recommendations published based on their consensus estimates that sales will increase 1647.40% this year and 542.00% next year.
August 12, 2010 Disinflation, not deflation, could be the likely scenario facing the U.S. economy. Disinflation is a period of slowing price increases. Deflation is a prolonged period of falling prices. Though deflation has been getting a lot of press, most economists are assigning a low probability to it actually occurring. What they are assigning a high probability to is the Federal Reserve keeping interest rates unchanged. A new poll by Reuters shows a consensus opinion that the first rate hike will not occur until at least mid-2011. This represents a reversal from economists who, until fairly recently, were calling for a rate hike to occur at some point this year. The reason why chatter about deflation is getting louder is because the economic recovery has been so painfully slow.
