Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) let us know last Tuesday that once again the company knocked it out the park. It had an unbelievable second quarter in 2012, largely due to strong iPhone sales – again. Analysts last month tried to read between the lines on earnings reports from Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T), and figured there would be lower iPhones unit sales. The stock got pretty beat up for week. However, Apple showed that iPhone distribution isn’t a two-trick pony. I’m certainly bullish on Apple, but I also don’t want to tie up all the money it takes to acquire shares in the $600-range. Below I’ll show you a more affordable way to play Apple’s expected growth, but first let me show you why I’m so confident in the

It’s crazy to think that in just the last three years, China has become the world’s second largest economy, the world’s largest energy consumer, and the world’s second largest oil consumer. A recent PriceWaterhouseCoopers report even estimates, “China could be the largest economy in the world as early as 2020…” Whether it happens by then, I honestly don’t know. But neither does anyone else. In fact, long-term estimates like these are almost never right. There’s one thing you can count on, though. No matter when (or even if) China takes the number one spot in the global economy, it’s going to require a great deal of energy either way. And it’s more important than ever investors take a close look at what’s going on. Because, when it comes to energy,

If all goes according to plan, by the end of June, Delta Airlines (NYSE: DAL)… … will start saving $300 million a year on fuel costs. … will add 5,000 new jobs to its payroll. … will see its share price steadily rising for the foreseeable future. How does it expect to do all of this? By being the first airline ever to provide itself with its own domestic fuel. Let me explain… Delta’s Bold Move into Oil Refinement Last year, domestic prices for airfare hit an all-time record high according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. The No. 1 reason for this is fuel cost. For Delta, nearly 40% of its revenue went to keeping its planes fueled. And so far this year, these costs only continue to rise.

When I was young, stupid and chasing girls, good looks were the most important attribute a female could have as far as I was concerned. A disastrous relationship with an insane model changed my thinking pretty quickly. After splitting up with “Crazy Christine,” as my friends used to call her, I became much more interested in what was beneath the surface. The same can be said about my approach to stocks. Most investors look at earnings when evaluating a company. And that’s a great place to start. Typically, a company that’s consistently increasing its earnings has a healthy business, and the stock should emulate that success. But I like to dig deeper and really get to know the company. To do that, I look at cash flow. Cash flow is

Over the last couple of weeks, investors have been hearing a lot about the Facebook IPO and the accompanying high-profile road show. For those who are confused, the road show is a planned set of meetings where the management team of the company going public, accompanied by its investment bankers, shares the investment merits of its about-to-be traded stock and why you, the investor, should buy in on the IPO. It is not about whether the CEO of said company is wearing a suit, or a “hoodie,” or will even show up at all. What’s challenging about the Facebook IPO isn’t whether this is a leading company in the new field of social media – oh, it certainly is. And it isn’t, in our opinion, about whether Facebook will continue

One question on many investors’ minds right now is how to beat inflation. U.S. Treasuries and certificates of deposit obviously can’t cut it right now… There’s a simple reason investors are flocking to the dividend market – savers don’t want to lose their purchasing power. But lately there’s been a new trend for yield chasers overseas and it may be less risky than you think. Returns over inflation look very attractive right now. For the first quarter for 2012, the average emerging bond fund tracked by Morningstar returned 7%, versus 0.3% for the Barclays Capital U.S. Aggregate Bond Index. But Why Emerging Market Debt? Some fund companies offer two types of emerging market bond funds: those that invest mainly in bonds issued in U.S. dollars and those that invest mainly

“Nobody ever got rich off of asset allocation.” That’s what Todd Schoenberger, Managing Principal at The BlackBay Group, told Yahoo! Finance readers recently. Instead, he advises, it’s much better to hold just two stock investments – specifically Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM). Exxon, after all, has $60 billion in cash at its disposal and Apple has $110 billion, more than enough to let both of them coast for some time. Similarly, they’re both stellar companies with impressive assets to offer investors… from Apple’s amazing stock price run-up over the years to Exxon’s steady dividend payouts. But what he forgets is that there is no “sure thing” investment in life. Sure, both companies have performed excessively well so far. But the past can only offer so

I’d say an Olympic gold medalist, but she lost her amateur status years ago. When my mom shops, she’s not satisfied unless she’s getting top merchandise for at least 40% off. And like a hunter who can’t wait to brag about the 12-point buck he took, my mother will tell anyone who’ll listen about the $300 sweater she got for $80. But unlike the tales of hunters and fishermen, when it comes to my mom and shopping, the big one doesn’t get away. Everyone loves a bargain. But some people are willing to work harder to get it. Investors are like shoppers. Some will stand in line to buy the latest

On January 22, 1984, Apple ran a television commercial introducing the Macintosh computer during the broadcast of Super Bowl XVIII. Inspired by George Orwell’s book 1984, a woman hurls a sledgehammer through a giant screen – in a fiery explosion – where a “Big Brother” figure is speaking to a bunch of nameless, unemotional faces. The takeaway was, of course, that IBM (NYSE: IBM) was taking over the world. Buying a Mac would show off your individuality and support of independent thought. That commercial was one of the most memorable and successful of all time. If the spot ran today, few would assume that the Big Brother character was IBM. A more logical assumption would be that it was Microsoft, Google, Facebook or, ironically, Apple itself. Fact is, to this

In 2011, just 1.65% of Canada’s crude was exported to countries other than the U.S., but Kinder Morgan has initiated a $5-billion pipeline project that’ll redirect Canadian oil to the West Coast for export to Asia. According to the Journal, this decision was accelerated by Obama’s decision to shelf the Keystone pipeline project that would have sent the crude south to the U.S. This new pipeline will increase the amount of oil piped to the West Coast

There are still plenty of opportunities to invest in the developing smart grid or “Enernet” – such as First Trust’s GRID ETF. Remember a couple of years ago when you couldn’t get away from reading about the smart grid or what some others refer to as the Enernet? Today in the news it’s almost as if production on the first great infrastructure project of the twenty-first century has all but stopped. But don’t be fooled… Spending on the smart grid is still growing at a compound annual rate of 17.4%. According to London research firm, Visiongain, the global smart grid market will total $33.91 billion this year.
Invest in the shortage that currently exists – LNG tankers – which will only be exasperated if the United States starts exporting. There’s a great, strange story by F. Scott Fitzgerald called, The Diamond as Big as the Ritz. In it, the Washington family has discovered a mountain that’s made entirely of diamond in an uncharted part of Montana. It’s just one giant, mountain-sized chunk. The tale deals with greed and the basics of the law of supply. But the Washingtons can’t let anyone know their diamond mountain exists… If people found out, it’d collapse the diamond market, making the precious stone worthless. And the Washingtons themselves would be cast into poverty. So, it’s this strange dual existence for the Washingtons. They’re the wealthiest family in the world, but only

Healthcare reform could be a minefield for Big Pharma in the long run. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act – less fondly known as “Obamacare” – was the big story to close out the month of March, as the Supreme Court officially took the case. In an effort to figure out which way the vote was going to swing, the media analyzed every word, pause and twitch the justices made. Though all of that heavy-duty analysis doesn’t actually prove anything; while the Court has likely already decided the healthcare mandate’s fate one way or the other, “We the People” probably won’t find out until June. Considering the political left’s repeated complaints about Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. and Deputy Attorney General Edwin S. Kneedler’s admittedly painful performance in explaining

In this incredibly low interest rate environment, there are some investments you’ll probably want to avoid, as well as some better choices for where to invest. For the last year, the effective federal funds interest rate has been 0.25%. The federal funds rate is considered one of the most important interest rates in the U.S. markets. The federal funds rate is used to control the supply of available funds and hence, inflation and other interest rates. Raising the rate makes it more expensive to borrow. That lowers the supply of available money, which increases the short-term interest rates and helps keep inflation in check. Lowering the rate has the opposite effect, bringing short-term interest rates down. In this incredibly low interest rate environment, there are some investments you’ll probably want

All I can say is… Our analysts are the real deal. Last year, Investment U Associate Investment Director Marc Lichtenfeld and Senior Analyst Steve McDonald made bold predictions about the world’s largest tech company Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL). And already this year, both of their forecasts have come true… Prediction #1: Apple to $600 Steve McDonald’s prediction came first on December 19th. Here’s the condensed version of what he had to say: “A recent survey of buying trends of iProducts for Morgan Stanley by AlphaWise was full of upside surprises. “The street may be underestimating Apple’s 2012 ‘iProducts’ sales by as much as 40 percent. “If this

These five U.S. banks are not only financially fit… they’re on track for share buybacks and high dividends in 2012. In January, bank regulators voted to release a proposal for how banks with more than $10 billion in assets should conduct stress tests annually. The purpose of the tests is to gauge whether or not individual banks can withstand another major economic downturn. The tests are now a required cost of doing business due to the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial oversight law. Stress tests have become a key component of how regulators will assess the health of the banking industry. The Federal Reserve also decided to put banks with more than $50 billion in assets through separate tests to gauge whether they have sufficient capital. The results of these tests came

There are a number of signals that bode well for price appreciation with individual stocks: growing market share, rising sales, strong earnings growth and improving margins… But you shouldn’t overlook another excellent indicator: share buybacks. According to Standard & Poor’s, U.S. public companies spent at least $437 billion last year buying their own shares back. That was 46% more than in 2010. Is this a good thing? Absolutely… Regardless of whether you’re an individual or a corporation, sitting on cash isn’t terribly rewarding these days with the average money market fund paying five one-hundredths of 1%. And if the outlook is uncertain, a business owner doesn’t want to commit to building new facilities or taking

The gold mining industry is watching its production costs surge amid rising energy prices, inflation and increasing labor costs. In 2012, Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX), the world’s largest primary gold producer, says its total cash operating cost could increase 13% to 22%. Meanwhile, Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM), another key gold stock, expects to see a 6%-to-14% rise in costs applicable to gold sales. The industry is hoping that rising gold prices will buoy the hike in production costs. An annual survey of industry predictions by the London Bullion Market Association forecasts gold could top $2,000 an ounce this year. The outlook – made by 26 leading precious metals analysts from the world’s largest bullion-dealing banks and trading houses – underscores bullish speculation of gold prices in the broader market.
Apple’s share price exceeded $500 this week, giving it the largest market cap of any U.S. company. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) so successfully sells computers, phones and other electronic gadgets that recently announced fourth-quarter profits soared 118% on a 73% increase in revenue. This is unheard of for a $475-billion company. To put this in perspective, earnings at the companies in the S&P 500 stock index are on track to post a 6.6% year-on-year rise for the fourth quarter. Yet once Apple’s earnings are factored out, the expected fourth-quarter gain shrivels to just 2.8%. This so skews results that many Wall Street analysts are now stripping Apple from the index before weighing valuations and making forecasts. Of course, it’s just a matter of time before Apple’s torrid growth begins to wane.

Last year, it reached seven billion, and in 2040, the United Nations expects it to be around nine billion. The organization noted in a recent report that the globe is running out of time to ensure that there’s enough water, energy and food for the rising population, as each year we’ll have more mouths to feed. I always liked Deep Thought’s answer because 42 is a key number for people in the oil business – it’s the number of gallons in a standard barrel of oil. The most terrifying aspect of all is that the doom and gloom is spread worldwide. Europe is a mess right now. Two of its four largest economies teeter on disaster. Meanwhile, Greece is the troubled teenager who knows he needs to get his act together but continues to find himself in bad situations. Germany and France are still experiencing menial growth… Eurozone authorities recognize there’s a problem, but it may be a too little too late. Then the United States has its own problems.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you know that Facebook has filed its initial paperwork with regulators for its initial public offering (IPO). And they’ve hired five underwriters for the job, with Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) taking the lead role. The company is currently looking at a valuation of $75 billion to $100 billion, which would be one of the largest initial public offerings in U.S. history. These Numbers Make No Sense… Facebook generated $3.7 billion in revenue in 2011, and a nice $1 billion in net income. For those of us who truly value fundamentals: If Facebook goes public and hits its high end with a $100-billion market cap – that means it would have a P/E of 100 times trailing earnings. Forbes took

While we were mowing down every opponent, I noticed that the Japanese referees tried very hard to even things out by calling fouls on us every chance they got. For example, a blocked shot was always a foul. This is called home-court advantage. American multinational executives, trying to grow in emerging markets like India, must feel just like we did, as regulators do everything possible to keep them off balance by favoring domestic companies. This is just one reason you should invest in emerging market multinational stocks. I call these stocks “boom chips.” The best way to describe a boom chip is to contrast it with, what is in many ways

Right now, a lot of investors and business news junkies are incensed by Freddie Mac’s move to profit by intentionally giving their customers bad service. And they should be. They just shouldn’t be surprised… Because this is merely the latest of many examples of the government sponsored enterprise (GSE) behaving badly. Freddie Mac, first formed in 1970 as the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp., was allegedly designed “to stabilize the nation’s residential mortgage markets and expand opportunities for homeownership,” as its website claims. But as recent history has clearly shown, it and its partner in crime, Fannie Mae, have done anything but that. One of the first publicly recognized signs of its history of corruption came in 2003, when Freddie was fined $125 million for essentially cooking its books between

The rise of commodities may not be a fad. Instead, it may be a product of social behavior and theory. I present to you the premise of the “commodity supercycle.” The concept is more than vague investor intuition; its theory is based on the work of twentieth-century economists who studied the result of demographic shifts in populations. These shifts resulted in specific effects regarding the demand for basic commodities. Economist Simon Kuznets, the 1971 Nobel Prize winner, did research on emerging markets that led him to discover that 20-year cycles arise in countries with policies to expand infrastructure – which generates a substantial increase in the demand for resources. He uses the United States in the 1950s as an example with the creation of President Eisenhower’s U.S. interstate highway system.

And we know that the older we get, the more we spend on healthcare. Consider: The average senior takes between two and seven prescription medications. Two out of three seniors will suffer a physical or mental impairment. One out of three seniors will spend time in a nursing home. All of those things cost money – not to mention, chemotherapy, insulin, rehab stays, regular doctor appointments, weight loss programs and nutritional supplements. Earnings rose to never-before-seen levels. iPhone, iPad and Mac sales also all reached new highs. Even more, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook says this is only the beginning. He states, “Apple’s momentum is incredibly strong, and we have some amazing new products in the pipeline.” One of these innovations, the company announced, will almost certainly be the introduction of near-field communication, or NFC, technology in new iPhones and iPads this year. That’s an 85% drop. As Reuters recently reported, “The unrelenting surge in shale gas production and one of the warmest winters on record are driving the natural gas market toward uncharted territory. Soon companies may have to pay to get rid of their gas.” So far, this has been tough news for natural gas drillers and electric utilities. Perhaps even before. Let me explain… At roughly $2.41 per million Btu, U.S. natural gas prices are in the dumpster. The truth is, they’ve been declining for years. And while the new proposal is similar to the Senate’s on Christmas Eve, it eliminates some of the pork to Nebraska and other special interests. I’m not going to politicize, though. Around this time last year, I opined that commodities like gold, silver, fertilizers, coal and oil were in increasingly short supply. Prices for these and other commodities were approaching 10-year highs, and would keep on rising. How did that statement pan out? Let’s take a look. Precious Metals According to data from Kitco, gold started the year around $1,400 per ounce, and is currently trading at just over $1,600 per ounce. Silver, on the other hand, started the year at $30.70 per ounce, and now trades a tad lower in the $29.50-per-ounce

by Steve McDonald, Investment U Contributing Editor Monday, December 19th, 2011 The street may be underestimating Apple’s (Nasdaq: AAPL) 2012 “iProducts” sales by as much as 40 percent. Apple’s numbers have been amazing so far, but if the new numbers are correct, the stock price is going to explode. Apple is shaping up to be next year’s big story, again, and our aversion to what appears to be pricey stocks will have those who ignore this one watching the money train leave the station – again. Most stock buyers are in love with the $7 tech idea that can return 40 or 50 percent in a heartbeat. Stocks that sell for $380 per share just aren’t on most tech investors’ Christmas lists. It cuts against our grain to pay that

As the year winds down, here are my thoughts for what lies ahead in 2012 for income investors. Prediction #1: The “Crowded Trade” Chatter Heats Up Many Wall Street pros are scoffing at buying stocks with solid dividends. I believe this is for two reasons: The first is that in order for the Wall Street machine to make money, and that includes the financial media, you need to be trading constantly, generating commissions and hanging onto every word as to which stocks will go higher and which are going to tank. If you’re investing in dividend paying stocks, chances are

by Chris Matthai, Investment U Research Tuesday, December 13, 2011 Individuals, businesses and governments are under attack… cyber attack. Collectively, we’ve never faced as many online threats as we do today. Why is so much hacking happening now? The answer is simple: More valuable information is stored online now than ever before and – at the same time – many organizations’ cyber security measures are still not up to snuff. And, unfortunately, our international competitors are taking full advantage of these shortcomings. An Onslaught of Foreign Intrusions According to a recent U.S. government report from the Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive, government agencies and private companies are still failing to shield their networks from foreign hackers and illicit programmers. But the surprise revelation was that the report pointed the

It was much the same in the mid-1970s when stagflation was all people could talk about – except for the busy founders of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Genentech, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT). Most are giant behemoths, employing millions of people between them. These companies – among the world’s largest corporations – are primarily in the banking and energy sectors. Some, like the giant oil and gas company, Saudi Aramco, aren’t open to investors at all. But many are. Some fund managers shun these companies. With the governments that control them wielding various degrees of power over their daily operations, shareholder interests aren’t always viewed as a top priority. We’ve known about these shale formations for decades. The only problem was that back then, the technology didn’t exist to tap into the oil wealth within the rock formation on a large scale. Then along came hydraulic fracturing… Controversial, Yes… But Effective Hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as “fracking,” is a technique where you shoot sand, water and a mix of chemicals into shale to release the oil and natural gas trapped below the rock. This technology alone is the reason why we can now retrieve oil and natural gas locked deep below the earth’s surface. So what does the government have to say

by Jeannette Di Louie, Investment U Research Tuesday, November 29, 2011 Once upon a time, the term BRIC meant something. Brazil, Russia, India and China were all seen as rising stars in the global economy, and investors couldn’t get enough of them. Not so much anymore. These days, only China seems to make the news. Admittedly, there’s some good reason for that. The Chinese economy has grown by leaps and bounds for years now, and its political sway seems to be increasing just as quickly. Just this month, U.S. President Obama refused to make a decision on Iran’s nuclear aspirations before he spoke to Chinese leaders. No wonder many economists predict China will surpass the United States as the world’s largest economy in less than 20 years. Then again, economists

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Tuesday, November 29, 2011: Issue #1653 Williston, North Dakota is a dusty, prairie town. It’s just a stone’s throw from the Canadian border. Up until a few years ago, few Americans had ever heard of it. Now they’re flocking there in droves. Even strippers from Vegas are making the migration. You see, there’s no recession in Williston. Far from it: The city’s unemployment rate is close to zero. The majority of the jobs sport starting salaries north of $100,000 a year. That’s not a typo: Six figures to start. It’s a real honest-to-goodness Western boomtown. The city’s two strip clubs are packed seven nights a week. They’re a good place to check out if you’re job hunting. Many workers find a job a

by Chris Matthai, Investment U Research Wednesday, November 30, 2011 According to Bloomberg, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) is currently shifting derivative contracts between its retail deposit bank, Bank of America NA, and its wholly owned brokerage arm, Merrill Lynch. At first glimpse, no big deal right? Wrong… Not when we’re talking about $75 trillion in derivatives contracts that B of A is backing. And regulators may soon be putting an end to these transfers. Problems for Bank of America What’s at issue is that derivatives contracts usually require counterparties to post collateral in amounts that can increase if their creditworthiness deteriorates. And Bank of America’s September downgrade from Moody’s Investor Service is causing problems for B of A. At stake for Bank of America is the continuing ability to

by Jason Jenkins, Investment U Research Wednesday, November 30, 2011 The plan to increase the capacity of the Eurozone’s European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) is in dire straits. Several Eurozone officials have stated that the now €440 billion rescue fund may only be able to raise in additional funds about half of what Eurozone officials had expected due to the market conditions that have transpired over the past month. Ace in the Hole If you want to know what’s caused all the market volatility the last few months, look no further than the Eurozone. The markets have reacted favorably to any words of sensibility and logic coming from officials. And then the markets tank when those promises have not come to pass. But their ace in the hole was the

by Marc Lichtenfeld, Investment U Senior Analyst Wednesday, November 30, 2011: Issue #1654 Did someone flick the switch? After several years of up and down economic data, suddenly it feels like the positive data is starting to stick. According to payroll processor ADP (Nasdaq: ADP), 206,000 new private sector jobs were added in November. And October’s figure was revised upwards to 130,000 from 110,000. Despite Washington’s desire to pad their own E*Trade accounts rather than do their job and establish some fiscal sanity, things appear to be slowly on the mend. I know it’s not exactly 1998 when there was a chicken with stock options in every pot, but we’re seeing signs of an economic thaw. Black Friday numbers were sensational. Americans spent $52.4 billion, up 16 percent from last

by David Fessler, Investment U Senior Analyst Tuesday, November 15, 2011: Issue #1643 Most natural gas drillers have been scrambling to reposition their drill rigs over oil-rich acreage… And why not? With oil once again hovering near the $100-a-barrel mark, you can hardly blame them. But Monday’s news from BHP Billiton Limited (NYSE: BHP) contradicts that notion. Billiton announced that it plans to spend somewhere around $4.5 billion on shale gas development. That’s not a typo. Perhaps even more amazing is that’s just what it’s going to spend next year. That’s an enormous amount of money compared to what some other natural gas companies are spending. Many of them have repositioned their rigs and their business plans around drilling for shale oil. But the real message Billiton is telegraphing is
