(PEP) Pepsico Induces America to Clean Up

Pepsico Inc. (PEP) announced that through the ‘Dream Machine Recycling’ initiative it will introduce 2,500 Free Green Cans  throughout the Chicago Park District. It will be available across 16 miles of downtown lakefront and increase public access to recycling bins in the Park District by 125 percent.

The Dream Machines are recycling kiosksthat offer residents and visitors with a convenient way to reprocess their plastic bottles and aluminum cans while on-the-go. They are computerized receptacles that include a personal reward system that allows consumers to collect and redeem points for each bottle or can they recycle in the kiosk.Rewards comprise of branded baseball caps, discounted PepsiCo products and movie tickets.

Free Green Can offers free, turn-key recycling programs by partnering with environmentally friendly companies that support local recycling efforts by tapping consumers with sponsorship, advertising and/or public messages.

The retail giant has promised that with an increase in recycle Pepsi bottles and cans in the Dream Machines PepsiCo will heighten its support for the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV).  EVA is national program offering free experiential training in entrepreneurship and management of small businesses to post-9/11 U.S. veterans with disabilities.

Pepsico embarked on a project of increasing the U.S. beverage container recycling rate from 34 percent to 50 percent by 2018.  Dream Machine recycling initiative, a joint venture with Waste Management, comes as an effort to meet this end. Since the Dream Machine launch on Earth Day 2010, PepsiCo has got into partnerships that will help spread kiosks in a number of highly trafficked public locations across the U.S.

PepsiCo has gone to great lengths to promote its new innovation, particularly online. Moreover, US actor Aisha Tyler has been engaged to promote the launch through a comedy video on the satirical website, Cracked.com.

PepsiCo reported that these machines consume as much power as a home computer. While Europe has had bottle-recycling machines for years, America is in dire need of kiosks and dustbins at frequent intervals to keep clean.

Industry Analysts feel that though this effort of Pepsi is worth praise, the company no doubt has commercially beneficial reasons behind this mission. The entire effort indirectly encourages more consumption of its beverages while the apparent goal is to keep the country clean.

Pepsico holds a Zacks #3 Rank, translating into a short-term ‘Hold’ rating.
