(NVTL) Novatel Wireless Strengthens Ovation Series
Novatel Wireless Inc. (NVTL) strengthens technical features of its industry leading Ovation series of USB data modems. In the first half of January, the company launched its Ovation MC996D High-Speed USB Data Modem for HSPA+ mobile broadband network. HSPA+ is the next evolution of high-speed packet access (HSPA) wireless broadband technology with greater capacity for data throughput compared to standard 3G networks. HSPA+ systems offer data rates from 14.4 Mbps to 28 Mbps with the potential to achieve data rates of 42 Mbps on a 5MHz carrier. MC996D was introduced by Telefonica SA (TEF) of Spain.
Novatel selected WCDMA/HSPA and EDGE power amplifiers of ANADIGICS Inc. (ANAD) for its Ovation MC996D and MC998D wireless broadband USB modems. ANADIGICS is a leading provider of innovative RF solutions for broadband wireless communications. Both MC996D and MC998D USB data access products facilitate laptop, PC, and notebook users upload speeds as high as 5.76 Mbps and download speeds of 21.6 Mbps or higher on HSPA+ networks.
According to Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), there were 315 WCDMA networks in operation throughout the world, at the end of 2009. Out of these, 303 networks also offered HSPA service with subscribers’ data rates of 3.6 Mbps or higher. The GSA confirmed 37 commercial HSPA+ networks in service at the end of 2009. Another 29 operators around the world will deploy HSPA+ in 2010 or 2011.
Recently, Novatel successfully completed the first data transmission over dual-carrier HSPA+ using Qualcomm Inc’s (QCOM) industry-leading MDM8220 (Gobi) chipset. Dual-carrier HSPA+ will deliver more advanced data capabilities and support more compelling applications. Novatel has decided to launch its first dual-carrier HSPA+ data access product based on MDM8220 in the second half of 2010. This product is likely to support data speed of 42 Mbps.
