(MS) Morgan Stanley Picks EnerNOC to Save Energy
In line with its constant energy saving efforts, on Thursday Morgan Stanley (MS) announced the purchase of Monitoring-Based Commissioning (MBCx), an energy efficiency software application from EnerNOC Inc. (ENOC). The MBCx application will be installed in the company’s headquarters in Manhattan, New York; where leveraging the convergence of IT and energy data represents a huge prospect for efficiency and cost savings.
EnerNOC is a leading provider of clean and intelligent energy solutions. Its MBCx application collects and evaluates 5-minute interval data from 8,000 different points in the building management systems and automatically spots energy usage discrepancies and inefficiencies. The types of energy variances tracked here are usually nil or low-cost operational opportunities, making MBCx a highly capital-efficient and instantly effective software application.
While investment in energy-efficient projects are expected to have an accretive affect on the cost savings of a company, it also ensures that Morgan’s buildings are run at optimally efficient occupancy usage rate that tends to fluctuate on the manual programming of systems. MBCx has identified over $100,000 worth of energy savings for Morgan Stanley, from operational energy efficiencies such as refining automated schedules to better align with actual occupancy usage behavior.
Morgan Stanley itself is an electricity power marketer in the U.S., with six electricity generating facilities in the U.S. and Europe. However, these energy-contract securitization commodity activities in this wing of Institutional Securities business segment are subject to extensive and evolving energy, commodities, environmental, health and safety and other governmental regulations in the U.S. and abroad. For instance, liability could be incurred without regard to a lapse under certain environmental laws and regulations for the remediation of contaminated areas. Failure to comply with these laws and regulations may result in substantial civil and criminal fines and penalties. So the company is liable to maintain the required environmental standards on both personal and professional levels.
Moreover, several Fortune 500 companies have installed EnerNOC’s MBCx platform in the past 12 months. Hence, we believe the MBCx platform will help Morgan operate its building management systems more efficiently, focus on its expense management and optimize its resources.
