(HPQ) Hewlett Packard Works to Improve Notebooks

After revamping its printing segment by offering new products, technology and a strategic partnership with Toshiba for selling its laser jet printers, Hewlett Packard Co. (HPQ) has now taken up the task of enhancing its notebook product line. The company has come up with new advanced gadgets in this segment.

The most notable product in this segment is what the company claims to be the world’s slimmest full performance notebook PC along with a slim consumer notebook, expected to strike an optimum balance between enhanced performance, mobility and price. The products, christened HP ProBook 5310m and HP Pavilion dm3, are expected to cater to the same segment as the affordable HP Pavilion dv2 series did in the first half of 2009.

Now coming to product specifications, HP ProBook 5310m will mainly cater to the corporate segment, being specially designed for professionals. With this new notebook, the mobile professionals will no longer need to sacrifice performance in order to achieve great battery life. This new device is equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo SP9300 processor, has a thickness of 0.9 inch, weighs 3.7 pounds, has a 13.3 inch LED High Definition (HD) Display and is expected to deliver seven hours of battery life. This will be available in the price range of $699 to $899.

On the other hand, HP Pavilion dm3, provides customers with a mix of mobility, performance and enhanced entertainment capabilities, comes with a High Definition (HD) BrightView 13.3-inch diagonal LED screen and comes with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Neo Dual Core processors. This new product weighs around 4.2 pounds, has a thickness of one inch and offers a battery life of up to 10 hours. The company is already a leading provider of notebooks and these new products with enhanced features will strengthen its position even more. This new Pavilion series will be available in the price range of $549 to $649.

Technology research firm IDC projects that the light-weight notebook market is expected to grow in the next few years, so HP is launching new notebooks at the right time to encash on this opportunity. Moreover, we believe, this is Hewlett-Packard’s answer to the newly launched, “Inspiration Z” laptops by competitor Dell Inc. (DELL). Although prospects are good, competition is fierce in the notebook market as every other computer maker is coming out with new products. Hewlett-Packard has made a good attempt, but we are cautiously optimistic of the returns that the company will derive from this effort.
